Brave Rail Employee Receives Critical Injuries Amid Mass Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Service

A brave railway employee who intervened to protect passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

Surveillance video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Authorities announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Response and Aftermath

The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from medical care.

A witness filmed the suspect brandishing a large knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced officers on the platform. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave member of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist officers,” stated a senior law enforcement official.

Labor Reaction and Appeals for Measures

Rail unions were swift to praise staff and call for more measures. A labor official said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest possible assistance, resources and robust protocols in operation”.

A different union representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move swiftly to examine safety, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Driver Commended for Quick Action

The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by union representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“The driver did not stop the train in the center of two stations where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to access, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” explained a association official.

Additional Details

Police stated they received the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer described at first thinking if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon realized from people's expressions that it was serious.

Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terror-related attack and have asked the public to come forward with any additional information.

Train operations on the impacted line are expected to have disruption until the following day, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where possible.

Individuals with details that could help the inquiry are asked to contact authorities by texting a specific number with a case code.
