Debunking Venezuela Victory Footage and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.
Synthetic images claiming to show Nicolás Maduro detained following his apprehension by the United States have amassed countless of impressions on social media.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Emerged Within Hours
The first fabricated AI image apparently displaying him taken off a aircraft surfaced within hours. This image was absent from any authoritative US channels; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was created or altered with generative AI.
More AI-generated pictures began to spread in the following hours, purporting to present more angles of Maduro in custody. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures show they came from an Instagram account called ultravfx.
SynthID indicates all of these pictures were likewise produced using generative models.
Real Photo Posted but Fakes Persisted
Donald Trump released the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following the authentic image was made public, AI-generated images continued to spread but were altered to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation show the new fake images were originally uploaded on TikTok by a graphic design account. Once again, analysis confirms the new graphics were generated or edited AI tools.
