The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in Utah.

According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.

His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the society in spring.
